USF Contemporary Art Museum Welcomes Christian Viveros-Fauné as Curator-at-Large.

The University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum (USFCAM) is pleased to announce that Christian Viveros-Fauné has joined the museum as Curator-at-Large. He will also serve as the 2018-2019 Kennedy Family Visiting Scholar at the USF School of Art and Art History. The prolific critic, curator, former art dealer and ex-art fair director took up the post on August 7. His inaugural exhibition at USFCAM, Miki Kratsman: People I Met, the first US exhibition of the work of the prize-winning Israeli conceptual photographer, opened on August 20, 2018.

Margaret Miller, Director of the USF Contemporary Art Museum, shared her enthusiasm for this appointment. “Christian Viveros-Fauné's distinguished record of critical writing and curatorial expertise will bring a new perspective to our programming. His global reach will bring new artists and transformational exhibitions and projects to our students and community.”

From 2001 to 2018 Viveros-Fauné organized exhibitions at numerous international venues, including the Art Museum of the Americas (Washington, DC), the Bronx Museum of the Arts, Fundación CorpArtes (Santiago, Chile), the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno (Las Palmas, Spain), the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Santiago, Chile), the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Lima (Lima, Peru), the Museo de Arte Moderno (Mexico City, Mexico), the Museo de Bellas Artes (Santiago, Chile), and the National Gallery of Ireland. He has worked with such artists as Thomas Hirschhorn, Yishai Jusidman, Jannis Kounellis, Teresa Margolles, Richard Mosse, Angel Otero, Tavares Strachan, Superflex, Jorge Tacla, and Lisa Yuskavage.

As a writer, Viveros-Fauné has been published in Art in America, Art in Australia, artnet, Artnews, ArtNexus, Art Papers, ArtReview, The Baffler, Departures Magazine, El Mercurio (Chile), Frieze, Art Agency Partners’ in other words, Lapiz (Spain), La Tercera (Chile), Quien (Mexico), Newsweek, The New Yorker, The New York Press, The Paris Review Daily, and The Village Voice, among others.

Viveros-Fauné was awarded the 2010 Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant and named inaugural Critic-in-Residence at the Bronx Museum for 2010/2011. He has been a Lecturer at Yale University and Pratt Institute as well as a Visiting Critic at the Rhode Island School of Design and Holland’s Rietveld Academie. A collection of his criticism, Greatest Hits: Arte en Nueva York 2001–2011, was issued in Spanish by Metales Pesados, S.A. His latest book, Social Forms: A Short History of Political Art, will be released by David Zwirner Books in October, 2018.

With regard to his new role, Viveros-Fauné said: “After years of working independently as a writer and curator, I look forward to bringing many projects to fruition in a supportive environment like the one I have found at USFCAM. I really couldn´t be happier. I also look forward to serving as a bridge between the Tampa Bay area and the global art world.”
