Iva Gueorguieva
Iva Gueorguieva’s complex abstract paintings are awash with color, movement and texture. Layering cut fabric, paper and paint on the surface of the canvas to create seemingly chaotic compositions, she notes that the action of creating is for her a way of thinking about space and time. The artist adapted this complicated, spontaneous and highly individualized way of working to the collaborative environment of the printmaking studio. The subtle and nervous lines and shapes are achieved through an encyclopedic array of processes—direct gravure, spitbite aquatint, drypoint, woodcut, lithography and silkscreen—and punctuated by delicate chine collé elements. The mixed media prints, while clearly linked to her painting, add another dimension to her artistic practice.
Born in Bulgaria, Iva Gueorguieva emigrated to the United States in 1990 and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. She received her B.A. in Philosophy from Goucher College in Baltimore and her M.F.A. from Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia, where she studied painting.
Her solo exhibitions include shows at Angles Gallery, Santa Monica, CA; Outline, Amsterdam, Netherlands; Electric Works, San Francisco, CA; Pomona College Museum of Art in CA; Carl Berg Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Heriard Cimino Gallery, New Orleans, LA; and Stephen Stux, New York, NY. She has been a part of group exhibitions at Contemporary Art Museum, University of South Florida; Ben Maltz Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Dunn and Brown Contemporary, Dallas, TX; Carrie Secrist Gallery, Chicago, IL; Angell Gallery, Toronto, Canada; and Sampson Projects, Boston, MA. She teaches drawing and painting at UCLA.
